Trucks (American English) are motor vehicle used for carrying goods and materials. Light trucks are similar in size to an automobile. Commercial transportation trucks are large in size and also serve as a platform for specialized equipment. Commercial transportation trucks are used to carry heavy-weight goods on long distances.
The trucking industry is also referred to as the transportation or logistics. In this case, most often trucks; usually a box truck, semi truck, or dump truck is used. The trucking industry provides an essential service to the American economy by transporting large quantities of raw materials, works in process, and finished goods over land—typically from manufacturing plants to retail distribution centers. Trucks are also important to the construction industry.
Before 1900, most freight transported over land was carried by trains using railroads. Starting in 1910, the development of a number of technologies would give rise to the modern trucking industry. Advances in modern technology have made significant contributions to improvements within the trucking industry. Trucks equipped with numerous satellite communication features and automatic transmissions are not unheard of, and truck stops featuring WiFi internet access are now commonplace.
